About "2002" installation

In 2002 Uruguay experienced its worst economic, social, and psychological crisis as nation. Between 2002 and 2003 more than 52.000 people left the country and the number of suicides skyrocketed. Inspired by Sugimoto’s white screen that illuminates dark and empty theaters, I documented Montevideo urban landscape crisis through white billboards. As he questioned himself "Suppose you shoot a whole movie in a single frame? " The answer: "You get a shining screen”. Indeed, the complete absence of advertisements on billboards summarizes all the consequences of a deep economic crisis, beyond obvious images of queues in soup kitchens, beggars, the closed doors of businesses. Even the main billboard at Carrasco National Airport turned white. This work was exhibited as an installation, in Montevideo and abroad, with a large-scale model that represented an empty city, with a sound especially designed for the exhibition by Carlos Casacuberta.
